Individual Psychotherapy
Individual psychotherapy, commonly referred to as talk therapy, involves a one-on-one therapeutic relationship between a patient and a licensed mental health professional. This type of therapy is designed to help individuals explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a safe and confidential environment.
The therapeutic process allows clients to gain insight into their experiences, improve coping mechanisms, and enhance interpersonal skills. It also offers a supportive space for clients to process trauma, manage anxiety and depression, or navigate life transitions.
Ultimately, individual psychotherapy seeks to empower clients by fostering self-awareness, promoting resilience, and enhancing overall mental well-being. As clients gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their behaviors, they can make informed choices that lead to healthier and more fulfilling lives.

Before therapy even begins, a free 15-minute consultation (usually over the phone, unless the client would like for it to be in person) is offered to determine if psychotherapy is appropriate. Primarily, the conversation will be about what your goal for therapy is and determine if that goal is within my scope of practice. While this brief conversation is informative, it also serves another purpose: it gives both of us an opportunity to "feel each other out." Psychotherapy requires rapport, and it will be ineffective if you are unable to open up to me. While you shouldn't expect to feel 100% comfortable right away, you should get the sense that I am someone you can see yourself establishing a trusting relationship with in the near future. If both of us agree, then treatment can begin.
Typically, the first psychotherapy appointment starts with a clinical interview so I can learn more about you and determine the best way to help you. During this appointment, you can expect me to ask about your family history, details related to your current issue(s), and how your current functioning may be impacted.
Next, I will develop a treatment plan guided by aspects of specific therapy modalities. While the plan is created by me, you will be consulted as you are the primary expert on yourself. Once we agree on a treatment plan, psychotherapy can begin.
The actual process of psychotherapy varies greatly from client to client. Some individuals require appointments twice a week, while others find that having therapy sessions every other week is sufficient. I will work with you to determine a schedule that best meets your needs. In the beginning of psychotherapy, the goal is to establish therapeutic rapport. It has been my experience that weekly sessions are the best way to do this. After that, we will work together to reduce any maladaptive functioning or distressing symptoms, while promoting healthy alternatives. Once an individual reaches this point, I may suggest that therapy is reduced or even discontinued. While I will always be there to support you, the goal of therapy is to develop healthy coping mechanisms so therapy is no longer necessary -- though periodic maintenance sessions are never a bad thing :).
